The Durango boys soccer team scored a 5-0 shutout victory over Montrose on Saturday.

The Demons controlled the game from the start, getting an early score and continuing to pepper the goal with shots after that.

Sam Carozza scored in the fifth minute to give DHS a quick lead.

Six minutes later, Montrose’s goalie blocked a Durango shot, but the rebound bounced free, and Davis Cameron made MHS pay by kicking the loose ball in the net.

Later in the half, Owen Carozza beat the goalkeeper to give DHS a 3-0 lead.

To start the second half, Cedar Newman dribbled by one defender, found an open spot in front of another defender and fired a shot in the net for another Demon goal.

Durango made some good runs, had some nice passing and kept the pressure on Montrose after that.

The Demons’ defense, meanwhile, kept Montrose from getting good scoring opportunities.

In the final 10 seconds, DHS fired one more shot on goal. The goalie blocked it, but it bounced free, and when a defender tried to clear the ball, his kick ricocheted off the goalie and in the net for the final Durango goal.

The Demons, who were ranked No. 5 in the latest poll, will host Fruita Monument at 6 p.m. Thursday in the team’s final home game.

The team will then conclude its regular season at Montrose Oct. 22.

Grand Junction leads the 4A/5A Southwestern League with a 5-1 league mark. Durango is 4-1-1 in the SWL and 10-1-2 overall. Durango and Grand Junction split their season, but DHS is in second place because of a tie against Fruita.... Click here to read full article
