Griswold shoots an 83 to qualify for state

Durango High sophomore golfer Zach Griswold shot a 46 on his first nine holes Tuesday at the 4A Region 4 championships at Montrose’s Cobble Creek Golf Course. On the second nine, however, Griswold shot a 37 to move up the leader board and qualify for the state championships with a 14th-place finish.

“On the second nine, he fought pretty hard to get back into it,” said Durango head coach Kirk Rawles. “He putted lights out on the second nine.”

Freshman Bailey Burke, meanwhile, finished one stroke out of a playoff for the final state qualifying spots. Burke finished 24th with an 85.

“I like the way both of them battled back,” Rawles said.

Senior Antony Flint shot an 87 to place 27th, three shots away from making the playoff.

“I really felt for Anthony; he just never found his rhythm this year,” Rawles said.

Nicholas Best, who had been the team’s steadiest golfer during the regular season, struggled on Tuesday and shot a 100.

In the team race, DHS finished seventh at 255. Montrose won it with a 233, followed by Mullen (234) and Steamboat Springs (235).
