Sports roundup: Durango girls place third at state cross-country meet

The Durango High School girls cross-country team finished third in the team race Saturday at the Class 4A state championships in Colorado Springs.

Niwot had five runners finish in the top-seven to run away with the team title with 20 points. Battle Mountain finished second with 138, followed by Durango with 143 and Air Academy in fourth with 170.

For the Durango boys, senior Land Lambert led the team with a sixth-place finish in 15 minutes, 55 seconds. The DHS boys finished 11th in the team race with 282 points. Cheyenne Mountain claimed the team title with 26 points, followed by Niwot (63) and Battle Mountain (136) in third.

Seniors Angela McManus and Abby Fehr led the DHS girls. McManus placed 25th in 20:07 and Fehr finished 26th in 20:12.

Freshman Sofia Voss (30th, 20:28), junior Nina Quayle (40th, 20:43) and freshman Dea Ilg (49th, 20:54) rounded out Durango’s team score while freshman Brynn Aggeler (64th, 21:10) and junior Willow Lott (96th, 22:06) also ran for the Demons.

Senior Damian Frausto was the second Durango boy to finish, placing 18th in 16:27. Sophomores Nathaniel Ellis finished 81st in 18:02, Charlie Dillman placed 85th in 18:06 and Will McFarlene finished 136th in 19:16 to score for DHS. Senior Thomas Pope (148th, 19:57) and Micah Zastrocky (155th, 21:25) also competed at the state meet for Durango.
