The Durango High School alpine ski team raced in a pair of giant slaloms at Ski Cooper and Aspen in the past two weeks and qualified more athletes for state in the discipline.

Junior Toby Scarpella continued to lead the Demons. Scarpella finished third at Ski Cooper on Jan. 28 after posting the second-fastest first run and the third-fastest second run. His time of 2 minutes, 4.42 seconds was 0.13 seconds behind Aspen’s Nico Smith and 2.39 seconds behind the winner, Aspen’s Chase Kelly.

Two other Durango boys also finished in qualifying position. Baron Bronson finished 13th in 2:12.83, and Holden Bronson placed 14th in 2:13.83.

Annabel Carithers placed 12th in 2:18.29 to lead the Demon girls. Alaysia Cullum finished 22nd in 2:23.74, and Annisa Allred placed 36th in 2:34.07 to round out the team score.

The Durango boys placed third behind Aspen and Middle Park. The girls finished fifth behind Aspen, Lake County, Middle Park and Nederland.

“The snow was soft, and the course was pretty flat, making it hard to carry speed,” said DHS head coach Jill Carithers. “We saw a few new teams at this race including Aspen. Overall, it was a great race, and our athletes did really well.”

The team then raced in Aspen last Friday and Madison LeSage, Fehr, Zach Oliver and Dane Englund all qualified for the state GS championships. In the team races, Durango’s boys finished second behind Aspen, and the girls placed third behind Aspen and Battle Mountain.

“Wow, what a great showing at Aspen,” coach Carithers said. “I am really proud of all of (the skiers). It was a tough course as promised – steep, icy and cold.”

Six boys finished in qualifying position in the top 18. Toby Scarpella won the race with the fastest first run and fastest second run in 1:15.62, almost 2 seconds ahead of Aspen’s David Connors in second.

Barron Bronson placed 11th in 1:24.02), Holden Bronson placed 12th in 1:24.45, and Oliver placed 16th in 1:27.46, tying teammate Fehr. Englund placed 18th in 1:27.89.

LeSage led the Durango girls, placing 10th in 1:26.05. Ava McClellan placed 14th in 1:28.43, Lauren McClellan finished 17th in 1:30.79, and Annabel Cari... Click here to read full article
